Adolescent Childbearing is Risky

Teenage pregnancies are risky everywhere, and the younger the girl, the higher the risk. These African girls under 15 are five times more likely to die in childbirth than women in their 20s. Many of those who survive obstructed labor have a stillborn baby and tragically end up with fistula or other severe illness.

Thus, delaying a girl's first pregnancy is a critical strategy for reducing fistula and maternal death.

  • Girls aged 15-20 are estimated to be twice as likely to die in childbirth as those in their twenties
  • Girls under the age of 15 are five times more likely to die from maternal cause
  • Girls aged 15-19 account for one in four unsafe abortions each year
  • Less than 20 per cent of all sexually active young people in Africa use contraception..
  • Complications during pregnancy or childbearing are the leading cause of death for girls aged 15-19 in African countries
